You decided to partner with Dupont to put Kevlar in a few of your tires and frankly it’s all people can talk about. Seriously watch ANY review with a Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure With Kevlar® tire (seriously, thats the tire’s full name and capitalization...do they read Jalopnik I wonder?) and if they mention the tire they will ALWAYS mention it has Kevlar. Sometimes they will talk about how great Kevlar is, sometimes they talk about how it makes the tires better (how again?) but the point I’m trying to make here is that whatever you paid Dupont it seems to have been worth it...at least for them. The trouble, of course, is that the Goodyear All-Terrain Adventure With Kevlar® is a terrible tire you should ditch as soon as you can and replace with a real tire...assuming you want to use it offroad.

I have the DuraTrac M/T’s and they’re great, never popped a beed whenever I’m running on 18psi crawling over rocks. I’ve also not had a flat yet (knock on wood) but that’s probably due to luck more than anything else.

of course the Duratrac (interesting you call them M/T) don’t have the advantage of Kevlar technology. I never got a flat with mine either and man I tried.

Shit, I’m confusing what is on what truck. The 88 has Duratrac and the Disco has Wrangler M/T’s.

And the M/T’s are great, but way to soft for road use.

But KEVLAR, bro! If it’s bulletproof, it’s gotta be good, bro!

I thought the material was used in tires from the beginning, but only exotic racing ones at first.

It’s used in all kinds of stuff. Not really that special that you need to broadcast it, aside from some using other materials for the same applications...

The idea of aramid fibers originally was weight and heat, and had nothing to do with them being “tough”

And Kevlar does not stop a knife, so I’d imagine it won’t make a bit of difference with resisting punctures

This reminds me of a story. A couple years ago, a couple of my buddies and I were chatting with an auto show “booth professional” about the new Tacoma. She tried to tell us about the Kevlar tires it came with, but instead she told us how puncture resistant its new “cavalier tires” were. It’s become a running joke for us.

I recall Yokohama making a song and dance about using Kevlar in some of its passenger tyres back in the 80s...

Regardless...it’s fun stuff to work with as a woven fabric. You need special scissors to cut the stuff...

Are they marketing it for something else?

In theory, they could use it to replace steel belts to provide better protection from punctures with less weight.

Their claim is “toughness”, which is a kind of non-commital catchall that means nothing.

I managed to put a deep enough gouge in my dads KM2 to force us to replace it. Whoops.

I split open a tire completely once as a teen. My dad was less than pleased. Landed the jump though.

I put a set of 10-ply wrangler silent armor tires on my 01 F250 powerstroke. I didn’t buy them for the Kevlar, but they were a fine A/T tire. They were also pretty darn affordable when they first came out, although I don’t know that I would pay what they sell for these days.

I had a ski boat for years that used Kevlar in the hull... somewhere. Not in all of the hull, and I honestly have never found a reputable source of info as to which parts. I do know enough to know that most boats don’t use Kevlar and they do just fine. But a few people on The Internet will espouse about how great Their Boat Is Because It’s Made Of Kevlar... yeahnope.

You should ask them to provide graphs and calculations showing how tough the material is. Toughness is an actually term in material science, IIRC it is the area under a stress/strain graph.

Ask for the numerical value, watch them flounder.

Edit: I was right. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toughness

For example, ductile iron is extremely tough, ceramic and brittle steels are not tough.
